    General Purpose of the Position:

    The Primary Counselor is responsible for managing a primary case load, facilitating primary group and leading other therapeutic behavioral health groups within a substance abuse facility that provides Residential, Partial Hospitalization and Intensive Outpatient Services. The Primary Counselor provides a variety of client care services, as assigned by the Clinical Director.

    The Primary Counselor is responsible for providing Process Groups and other groups related to Skill Development, Life Skills, Interpersonal Processes and Psychoeducational Groups utilizing evidenced based techniques and motivational interviewing skills. Additionally, the Primary Counselor is expected to work as a team member of the counseling unit and work as an integral member of a multidisciplinary team. The Primary Counselor will assist other team members with completing assessments and other clinical documents and group facilitation, as warranted by the needs to the facility. Furthermore, it is expected that the Primary Counselor document all services with-in facility documentation time-frames.


    Essential Duties:

    • Primary case load management
    • Facilitation of Process Group and other therapeutic groups
    • Provides curriculum based group content as approved by the clinical and program director
    • Responsible for the completion of the Biopsychosocial Assessment, Self-Harm and Suicide Risk Screen, Trauma Assessment, Educational Learning Needs Assessment, Treatment Plans, Transfer Note, Discharge Summary and Discharge Plan
    • Documentation of individual sessions, therapy groups, family sessions and related activities (Immediately, no later than 24 hours of service)
    • Attends daily staff meetings and weekly training
    • Participates in monthly supervision with the Clinical Director
    • Assists with ACA (Against Clinical Advice) blocking
    • Works at a minimum, one weekend per quarter, on a rotating basis

    • Participates in professional development activities, such as, field related training, certification, education and licensure
    • Possesses the ability to provide effective treatment within the levels of care provided at the facility
    • Participation with curriculum development, as needed

    • Understanding of Medical Necessity Criteria and writing for managed care

    Computer Equipment and Software Requirements:

    • Word, Excel, Google Docs/Chrome and KIPU EMR

    Educational Background and Experience:

    • Master’s Degree in a health related field
    • Licensed or Registered Intern within the state of Maryland (LMHC, LCSW, LMFT)
