  • Overview

    The Primary Purpose & Function of CRNP Position

    To provide oversight and leadership to Physician Assistant and Nursing personnel under the direction of the Medical Director.  The CRNP will assure compassionate patient-centered care is delivered in a safe manner and environment to individuals seeking detoxification treatment for Substance Use Disorders and their associated conditions.   Medical, Clinical and Nursing services will be provided in accordance with evidence-based best practice standards and applicable to all Federal, State and Regional regulations per:     

    • Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for Behavioral Health Care;
    • COMAR regulations;
    • SAMHSA / BHA guidelines; and
    • Maryland House Detox organization policies, procedures and compliance standards.


    Position Responsibilities

    • Provide supervision for RN, LPN, with monthly sessions
    • Provide nurse practitioner services as part of an interdisciplinary team
    • Provide behavioral health assessments, screening, differential diagnosis and treatment through conducting an independent psychiatric evaluation
    • Maintain working knowledge of pharmacology, including drug interactions, reactions, and withdrawal management medications protocol
    • Prescribe medication and medication monitoring for patients who require psychopharmacological treatment, including medication education
    • Order medical or laboratory tests as indicated with review and follow up
    • Respond to, care for and/or refer / transfer patients for emergent care when co-occurring or co-morbid needs are identified and cannot be met at facility, including accessing 911 and/or initiating an involuntary commitment with documentation
    • Consult with Medical Director and/or Physician on cases beyond the scope of practice for CRNP.
    • Ensure patients are referred to a specialist, if indicated
    • Be on call for consultation including patient admissions
    • Attend monthly medical & nursing staff meetings and provide in-service training to staff
    • Provide coverage for nursing services when needed, including for nursing department when the Director of Nursing is out of the facility or unavailable
    • Provides accurate and timely interventions and documentation
    • Cover after hours as needed, or as part of rotation
    • Participate in Performance Improvement projects
    • Maintain appropriate boundaries and ethical standards with colleagues and patients to assure an appropriate setting and safe environment
    • Collect data and/or provide patient safety information with preparation of report and/or submission to appropriate organizational committees, as required
    • Maintain ongoing medically based program(s) and collaborative system of communication/documentation with ancillary third party providers: Pharmacy Consultant, Lab Services, Dietician, etc.

    • Knowledge of substances commonly used in addition to their biopsychosocial impact
    • Knowledge of the 12-Step Recovery program and process
    • Knowledge of all applicable Federal, State and Regional regulations, including Accreditation standards that govern treatment of Substance Use Disorders including confidentiality, patient rights, ethics and discrimination


    Required Physical, Mental or Visual Abilities


    • Requires occasion reaching and grasping objects
    • Requires using a keyboard to interact with computer system
    • Requires proofreading and/or reviewing documents
    • Requires infrequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing more than 25 pounds
    • Requires pushing and/or pulling non-motorized equipment (supply carts, med cart, etc) weighing over 50 pounds
    • Requires occasional stooping and bending
    • Requires walking and/or standing for extended periods of time


    Working conditions


    • Work requires occasionally performing unpleasant diagnostic or patient care duties



    Required Qualifications, Certifications and Experience

    • Master’s Degree in Nursing.
    • Maintain a current, valid and unrestricted Maryland Board of Nursing license as a Nurse Practitioner
    • Board Certification as a Psychiatric or Family Nurse Practitioner through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program or the American Nurses Credentialing Center
    • DEA Controlled Substance Registration for Schedules II-V
    • NPI registration number
    • Qualified to apply for DATA 2000 Physician Waiver to prescribe Schedule III, IV, and V narcotic medications
    • Working knowledge of DSM V
    • ASAM Certification within 12 months of hire
    • Current BLS Certification
    • 3+ years’ experience as practicing nurse practitioner, managing both acute and chronic illnesses
