Purpose and Function Summary: 


The primary function of this position is to provide direct patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation from admission through transfer or discharge. The Registered Nurse works with the interdisciplinary team to provide evidence-based best practices, high quality patient care and safety, and provides direct supervision to the nurses and behavioral health technicians.


The Nursing Supervisor will provide and monitor implementation of industry standards as per:

  • Joint Commission for Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for Behavioral Health Care;
  • COMAR regulations;
  • SAMHSA / BHA guidelines; and
  • Maryland House Detox organization policies, procedures and compliance standards.



Required Qualifications, Certifications and Experience   


  • Bachelor’s Degree with (4) years of experience, preferred
  • Associate Degree with (5) years of experience; (1) year experience must be within Behavioral Health.
  • Must have active unrestricted RN licensure in Maryland.
  • Must have state approved BLS Certification, Healthcare Provider Level.
  • Must be able to work independently and possess the ability to make independent
  • decisions when circumstances warrant such action.
  • Must possess the ability to effectively communicate and deal objectively with other personnel, visitors, patients, physicians, customers, and the public.
  • Must be flexible, have personal integrity, and the ability to function effectively as a team member with other employees.
  • Critical thinking, decisive judgement and the ability to function independently with minimal supervision in a fast pace environment
  • Ability to provide clear written and verbal communication with clients and staff and outside visitors
  • Maintain and promote the philosophy of a patient-centered preferences approach when identifying and addressing all patient needs, including family when indicated
  • Will participate as a contributing member of the multidisciplinary team when addressing all aspects of patient care, treatment, and services
  • Oversee aspects of clinical care provided by the LPN and BHT
  • Maintain open communication with the medical team regarding patient status, and any changes observed requiring medical intervention beyond scope of practice or expertise.
  • Complies with all organization policies and procedures, including HIPPA guidelines, OSHA standards, and all regulatory standards.
  • May attend clinical executive level management meetings as required
  • Maintain current knowledge of best practices for the care, treatment, and services of substance use disorder, associated co-morbidities, and impact on the provision of nursing care.




  • Working proficiency of the corporate process involving intake, treatment stay and discharge
  • Working knowledge of phone, messaging, and scheduling system
  • General understanding and proficiency with intake information and registration forms
  • Filing and maintaining medical records both in paper and electronic form
  • Preparing and presenting statistical outcome and progress reports
  • Oversee and maintain the scheduling and assignment for all nursing personnel; RN, LPN and BHT
  • Oversee clinical performance and provide feedback and evaluation
  • Ensure personnel maintain trainings as necessary and comply with all corporate policies and regulatory standards
  • Monitor proficiency of nursing personnel and identify necessary training needs
  • Collect data and prepare reports for submission to organizational and regulatory compliance committees
  • May attend management meetings as indicated
  • Maintain and oversee Pharmacy procurement, storage, handling, patient administration and reconciliation ledgers and documentation of patient medications.
  • Maintain Emergency and Stock Medications Inventory and report errant or expired stock/use, discrepancies and/or medication errors to Director of Nursing and Medical Director.




  • Will maintain modified assigned patient care load when census is higher
  • Measuring and recording vital signs both in paper and electronic form
  • Measuring and recording COWS and CIWA withdraw assessments
  • Recording patient information per clinician in paper and electronic form
  • Providing patient education including but not limited to office policies, medications, management of diseases, and special diets
  • Participating in community health education including Naloxone and other related behavioral health and substance use topics
  • Preparing patients for examinations performing behavioral health assessments and routine screening tests
  • Assisting the provider staff with examinations
  • Phlebotomy and collection of other lab specimens
  • Performing basic lab tests including urine drug testing
  • Maintain working up to date knowledge of pharmacology, including drug interactions, side effects, contraindications and withdrawal management medication protocols
  • Reconciling patient medications histories, orders, and administration
  • Preparing and administering medications
  • Change dressings, applying bandages, and other first aid procedures
  • Using CPR and AED skills when required
  • Maintaining supplies, equipment, and stocking for detox program
  • Maintaining cleanliness of clinical area, following infection prevention
  • Disposing of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards
  • Practicing OSHA safety standards
  • Performing timely, accurate, legal, and ethical documentation always
  • Knowledge of substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders and associated co-morbidities
  • Knowledge of substances commonly used in addition to their biopsychosocial impact
  • Knowledge of the 12-Step Recovery program and process
  • Knowledge of all applicable Federal, State and Regional regulations, including Accreditation standards that govern treatment of Substance Use Disorders including confidentiality, patient rights, ethics and discrimination
  • Participate in annual review process Maintain compliance with HIPPA and Confidentiality standards
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in trainings
  • Participate and assist in other duties as assigned


Required Physical, Mental or Visual Abilities


  • Requires occasion reaching and grasping objects
  • Requires using a keyboard to interact with computer system
  • Requires proofreading and/or reviewing documents
  • Requires infrequent lifting and/or carrying objects weighing more than 25 pounds
  • Requires pushing and/or pulling non-motorized equipment (supply carts, med cart, etc) weighing over 50 pounds
  • Requires occasional stooping and bending
  • Requires walking and/or standing for extended periods of time
